The first known device to try a detailed simulation of the [[human speech production mechanism]] was developed by the Hungarian scientist, Wolfgang von Kempelen. The speaking machine that he built was composed of a series of bellows, springs, bagpipes, and resonance boxes that were able to produce some simple words and short sentences.
The introduction of the digital computer allowed the development of computer-based speech synthesis methods in the latter half of the 20th century.
The speech synthesis technologies can be classified as:
- [[articulatory speech synthesis]]
- [[formant speech synthesis]]
- [[concatenative synthesis]]
- [[statistical parametric synthesis (SPSS)]]
- [[neural speech synthesis]]
